Your job as the parent: check in at the start ("What do you have today?") and check in at the end ("How did it go?"). Not constantly. Not hovering over their shoulder. Presence without micromanagement is the goal — they need to know you're there, not that you're watching every pencil stroke.

Step 3: The Done Signal (5 Minutes)

5 Tips That Make the Difference

1. Match the Time Expectation to the Grade

Not all homework blocks are created equal. Developmentally appropriate time limits matter — expecting a second-grader to sit for an hour is setting everyone up to fail. K–2: 20 minutes max (if it's not done, it's done anyway). 3–5: 30–45 minutes. 6+: 45–60 minutes, with a 5-minute break in the middle if needed. These reflect actual cognitive stamina by age.
